Lego Robotics at the Oregon State Fair

Lego Robotics clubs and competitions are an excellent way for young people to experience the excitement of technical creativity and gain insights in the possibility of a technical career.

Participating on a team is a fun way to learn about mechanical design and computer programming as well as teamwork and other life skills. No previous technical or programming experience is required to join a team.

The robots are programmed using a "flow chart" rather than a traditional programming language. Coaches often have the help of a technical mentor to teach the team members how to build and program a robot.

Alliance Charter Academy

There is a new Oregon charter school as different and exciting as any I've heard, called Alliance Charter Academy.  ACA differentiates itself with a high level of parental involvement, a mixture of learning tools including on-site and off-site learning, and a Personalized Learning Plan for every student.  ACA filled to its 220 student capacity just one week after gaining approval to start up.

ACA is not a school where students come to sit at a desk all day.  Rather, students and parents work with their chosen Educational Specialist (ES) to create a Learning Plan.  It offers a menu of choices that a student can choose with their ES from a course catalog.

On Monday, July 16th, the middle of summer, ACA held its Open House, inviting parents and students to meet the teaching staff and look over the course offerings.  Out of 220 students enrolled, 190 students and their parents showed up.  It's a fair assumption that some number of the 30 who didn't attend Open House were on their mid-summer vacation.  It's a fair assumption that a significant percentage of those who attended the mid-summer Open House will remain enrolled.  ACA is off to a great start.
